as a mom, and a designer, it gives me great joy to get to see other little ones growing up. little brantliegh is close to my daughter's age, so it is a little more special to have been able to "watch" her grow the last three years. next month this little princess is turning 5 and having a special princess make-over party with her friends and to celebrate, her mom asked for a custom design just for her. incorporated into the design are all things girlie and even a little dressed up doll designed after the little princess herself.

magical tutu princess party invitations

what little girl doesn't want to be a princess. and how many of those little girls want a princess party? we did this for my daughter's birthday, we had a princess theme and i had tutus, wands and crowns waiting for every little girl. they were all so excited and staying up for nights on end making everything was worth it. after that event, the awesome girl who helped me make all those things has now been making tutus for ther little girls for the past 8 months. her store is almost complete! she has tutus of all colors and will customize a single princess tutu or an entire party bundle just for you.

sometimes you have the perfect photo and you can not find the perfect announcement to go with it. it is those times that you want an announcement the compliments your photo perfectly... so, why not ask? depending upon the complexity of the work and how much of a backlog i have, i usually can customize an announcement to be perfect for you. occasionally the work involved may incur an additional design fee for the time, but i would never charge without letting you know. so, have a question? want to know if i can match something? just ask, katie's mom did and look how her's turned out :)

Custom photo announcements: what is your nursery theme?

i already have a couple of announcements that i have made to match my customers nursery, but want just a couple more to design as options. so help me out here you expecting or new moms, what is your favorite nursery theme?

taking the best pictures: turn OFF that flash

so so often, i get emails from customers saying. "here is the info, i am going to try and take a picture tonight." I read that and the photographer in me cringes just a little. "no no no" i think, "don't wait until tonight." because the BEST lighting for photos is natural light, sunlight, but not direct light. and the best time for outdoor photos is before sunset, what we call "the golden hour." your skin tones and all-around lighting and colors will be the best with the light that comes from outside! you can use this light either inside by a large window (sliding door, etc) or going outdoors in what we call "open shade" this can be under a big tree or in the garage with the door open. do not try and take photos in full sun, not only will your child look away and/or squint but you will get un-equal lighting and harsh shadows.

remembering Ava

a few years ago, when i got "into" photography, i joined flickr. it is basically a photo sharing site, but so much more. through this site, i was able to learn so so much about photography, aperture, composition, shutterspeed.... actions, post-processing, cropping and so much more. however, the best thing i have taken away from my experience on flickr are my "contacts" my friends. these people inspire me daily, laugh with me and cry with me. it is through flickr that I came across sheye. she is a photographer in Australia and is a mom... a mom to 4, one of which is in heaven. today is the 3rd anniversary of the day a tragic accident took the life of her 3 year old daughter ava, aka "super princess." on flickr, is is tradition to post photos in memory of ava on this day of all things pink and mostly pink balloons. being as i am rarely prepared and would honestly be oh so sad to try and take a photo of a pink balloon, i drew one...

I personally email all my customers after purchase (please check your spam folder).
I will email you and request all the info to go on your holiday card and you will reply back with the info and photo(s). However, we all know that life happens and i can not be at my pc 24/7, so if you rather submit info right after purchase (because your life happens too and you don't want to wait for me), you can do so. After I receive your info, i will send you a digital proof for approval within 48 hours.

the mom of these three gorgeous girls wanted an elegant design that went with the adorable photo. she chose the christmas elegance or holiday bundles. i kind of mizxed the two designs and added some dots to match the girl's skirt :)

recently, a customer introduced me to the cutest clothes ever. this designer makes the most gorgeous clothing for little girls and each piece is a blend of different colored fabrics, a mish mash of textures, colors and prints. they even have clothes for moms too. inspired by the clothing, i created these new designs. they will be in my store first of next week!

the beauty of two sided cardstock

much more then a combo holiday card/birth announcement. but BOTH in one. one of my favborite repeat customers envisioned this and i just brought it to life. on one side the family is announcing their beautiful baby girl and on the other, their 2009 holiday card :)
